28" CHAINSAW-CARVED CEDAR BEAR NESTLED IN A HOLLOW LOG
One-of-a-Kind Wood Sculpture by Artist Jess Alice Nestled within the natural opening of a cedar log, this hand-carved black bear transforms the character of the original timber into a distinctive piece of sculptural wildlife art. Measuring approximately 28 inches tall × 14 inches wide, the sculpture features a full-dimensional bear emerging from the hollowed center of the log.
Rather than carving away the natural exterior, portions of the original bark and weathered cedar have been intentionally preserved, creating a beautiful contrast between the refined sculpture and the raw character of the tree it came from. The bear is individually chainsaw-carved and finished by artist Jess Alice, with layered fur texture, dimensional features, and a rich black finish that stands dramatically against the warm tones and rugged surface of the cedar. The sculpture continues around the piece rather than existing only from the front, allowing the bear's form to emerge naturally from within the timber. The result is an original composition that feels as though the bear was always there—simply waiting to be revealed.
At nearly 2½ feet tall, this piece has substantial presence while remaining versatile enough for an entryway, hearth, cabin, lodge, covered porch, garden, office, or business.
ONE OF A KIND No molds. No mass production. Each Jess Alice sculpture begins with an individual piece of timber and is carved by hand, allowing the natural shape and condition of the wood to influence the finished artwork. The bark, grain, knots, openings, weathering, and natural markings of this particular log have been intentionally incorporated into the composition. These characteristics are part of the sculpture itself and ensure that this piece can never be exactly reproduced.
NATURAL CEDAR & NATURAL CRACKING Solid wood continues to respond to its environment after carving. As cedar naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, checking, cracks, bark movement, and small separations may develop or change over time. These are normal characteristics of solid-log sculpture and are not considered defects. They become part of the evolving character of the timber and contribute to the individuality of the artwork.
CARE & DISPLAY For the longest life, protected or covered placement is recommended whenever possible. When displayed outdoors, periodically apply an appropriate exterior wood sealer according to the manufacturer's directions to help protect exposed wood and the finished carving from moisture and UV exposure. Avoid prolonged contact with standing water or persistently wet ground. Natural checking generally does not require repair. Larger checks may be stabilized or professionally filled if desired.
